We are thrilled to announce the winners of our prestigious 2025 Annual Regional Safety Competition – recognised as one of the most esteemed accolades in the construction industry. These awards form part of a broader initiative by MBA North, in partnership with our sponsor, Federated Employers Mutual Assurance Company (FEM), to improve health and safety standards across the industry. They also provide a platform for companies to benchmark their Health and Safety (H&S) Management Systems and implementation practices against others regionally and nationally. This year’s competition opened on Monday, 27 January 2025, and closed on Friday, 7 March 2025. We are proud to share that the competition received 75 entries, representing a total project value of over R13.4 billion, a notable increase from the 67 entries submitted in 2024. Additionally, the number of sub-contractor entries rose by 3 compared to the previous year. Of the 75 entries, 85% were submitted by FEM policyholders – a strong indicator of the construction industry’s growing commitment to improved health and safety standards.
MBA North lead auditors travelled extensively across the northern regions, including Gauteng, Thabazimbi, Polokwane, Mbombela, eMalahleni, Bethal, Kriel and Rustenburg, covering a total distance of approximately 6,700 km.
We are also pleased to report that 93% of entries achieved a 5-star grading certificate, reflecting an outstanding level of compliance with relevant legislation and industry best practices within the MBA North region and beyond.
MBA North also called for nominations in several Best Performing categories, aimed at celebrating individuals who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to health and safety on construction sites. The categories included:

The competition results were submitted to Master Builders South Africa (MBSA) on 30 May 2025, and the category winners have automatically been entered into the MBSA National Safety Competition.
We look forward to celebrating these achievements at the MBA North Safety Awards Ceremony, scheduled for 21 August 2025.
